Shopping in Google AI Mode: How to prepare your store for UCP

Key takeaways

  • With the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard for commerce through AI assistants, customers buy directly in AI Mode in Google Search and in Gemini. The retailer remains the seller.
  • Google Merchant Center has a dedicated UCP integration area for this. Retailers implement the technology, register their interest and are selected by Google.
  • The rollout is starting in the US, with Australia and Canada following in early 2027. There is no date for Germany yet, which leaves time for thorough preparation.
  • What already works today: complete product data in Merchant Center, complete Product and Offer markup, clear shipping and return information, and good images and copy.

As of October 2026

A customer asks Google’s AI Mode which espresso grinder under €300 is a good choice for beginners and gets a short selection with reasons and prices. In the US, she can buy directly in that answer from a growing number of retailers. The Universal Commerce Protocol makes this possible. And almost everything retailers prepare for it already improves how Google and AI systems understand their products today.

What the Universal Commerce Protocol is

Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol on January 11, 2026. UCP gives AI assistants, online stores and payment providers a common language, from product search to purchase to after-sales service. Google developed the protocol together with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. More than 20 other companies support it, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Zalando.

Customers pay with Google Pay, using the payment and shipping details already saved in Google Wallet. According to Google’s developer page on UCP, retailers remain the seller (merchant of record) and keep their customer data and customer relationships.

The new UCP area in Merchant Center

Google Merchant Center, which retailers use to send their product data to Google, now has a UCP integration area (Integration Hub). According to Merchant Center Help, three steps lead there:

  1. You implement the technology following Google’s UCP developer guide.
  2. You fill out an interest form.
  3. Once Google has selected you, you get access to onboarding and test your integration in a test environment.

In the Integration Hub, retailers choose what suits their store: handing off the cart to their own website, direct checkout on Google, or linking with the customer account. Google shows the “Buy” button for products that are enabled in the feed with the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) attribute, as the help page on direct checkout explains. According to Google, UCP already enables direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers.

When buying in AI Mode comes to Germany

The UCP area is currently rolling out gradually in the US. Australia and Canada will follow in early 2027, according to Google’s announcement of September 16, 2026. In May, Google announced the UK as a further market.

Google has not yet named a date for Germany. AI Mode itself has been available there since October 2025. This gives retailers time, and it can be put to good use: the foundations for buying in AI Mode already determine how well Google understands your products today.

What retailers in Germany can prepare now

Google itself names the best preparation: all data in Merchant Center, from product feeds to brand assets, should be as comprehensive and up to date as possible. This translates into six steps.

Keep product data in Merchant Center complete

Title, description, images, price, availability, brand, GTIN and shipping belong with every item in the feed, each as described in the product data specification. Google puts a number on the benefit itself: merchants who implement the key feed recommendations see an average of 5% more conversions in the following month.

Explain products with conversational attributes

Since May 2026, retailers worldwide can use conversational attributes. They let you explain the finer details of your products to AI systems, for example with frequently asked questions and answers (question_and_answer), accessories and spare parts (related_product) or the user manual as a PDF (document_link). In tests with lululemon, according to Google, such information fed into 50% of relevant product recommendations in AI Mode. The approval status of your existing products is not affected.

Complete Product and Offer markup

Schema markup, meaning structured data based on schema.org in the page’s code, describes each product in machine-readable form. Google recommends using both: according to Google Search Central, providing structured data on your web pages and a Merchant Center feed gives you the best chance of qualifying for product experiences and makes it easier for Google to understand and verify your data correctly. Complete means:

  • Product: name, multiple images, description, brand, GTIN and SKU, plus ratings where available
  • Offer: price, currency, availability, condition and the URL of the product page
  • Shipping and returns: shipping costs, delivery times and return conditions, either in the offer or once centrally for the entire business

Ideally, markup, feed and visible page all contain the same information. Google describes all properties in its guide to merchant listings. For our clients, complete schema markup is standard in our AI visibility service.

For information about the company itself, such as services, locations and unique selling points, our tool GeoUp uses Schema & Snippets to generate Schema.org markup and citable text snippets from the measured visibility gaps and transfers both to the website with a single click.

Describe shipping and returns clearly

When customers buy in AI Mode, Google shows the return policy directly at checkout, according to the Merchant Center guide, with return costs, the return window and a link to your full policy. On your website, the markup types MerchantReturnPolicy and ShippingService complement copy that answers every question instantly: How much is shipping, how quickly will the goods arrive, how easy are returns?

Good product images and product copy

Google recommends multiple high-resolution images in the 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1 aspect ratios. In Merchant Center, a minimum size of 500 × 500 pixels applies from January 31, 2027, according to the product data specification. Good copy answers what customers want to know: intended use, dimensions, material, what is included and who the product is suitable for. Google is clear about this: meaningful product descriptions are essential for being discovered in the AI era.

Check your store system

If you work with a store platform or a service provider, ask them about their plans for UCP, as Google recommends in Merchant Center Help. Shopify has already built in the integration: according to Shopify Help, direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini is enabled by default for eligible US-based stores selling to customers in the US and is rolling out gradually. For custom-built stores, Google’s UCP developer guide describes the process.

GeoUp in practice: The recommendation comes before the purchase

Every purchase in AI Mode is preceded by a recommendation, and this is exactly the step we measure with our tool GeoUp. In our analysis of 12,769 AI answers on 27 companies from the DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland; January to July 2026, with 25 to 35 recommendation, comparison and price questions each to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews), 92% of all mentions appeared in list or ranking answers. 36% of all mentions took first place.

Our ongoing measurement series of 19 client websites, each with 30 questions to five AI systems, shows the same for product manufacturers (as of September 25, 2026). A manufacturer of floor care equipment ranked 1.3 on average in the latest measurement run, a manufacturer of kitchen appliances 1.6.

For retailers, this means that product pages with clear facts, structured data and answers to real customer questions are the foundation for being recommended. You can read how companies get onto these recommendation lists and reach the top in our article Get recommended by AI. With every measurement, GeoUp asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews 30 typical customer questions from your industry and records whether your company is mentioned, in what position and which sources the AI cites. Measurements run regularly, up to weekly, and you can add your own questions.

If you wish, our team takes care of the implementation: product data, schema markup and new content on your customers’ questions, with a monthly report and reviewed by people. You can book our SEO and GEO expert team at any time in addition to GeoUp. A short message to our email address is all it takes.
