Checking your AI visibility: The monthly routine with Search Console and GeoUp

Key takeaways

  • Since August 31, 2026, Google Search Console has offered a dedicated report on AI features for all websites. It shows how often links to your website appear in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and time period.
  • A measurement series with our tool GeoUp shows how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews answer typical customer questions: whether your company is mentioned, in which position and which sources the AI cites.
  • AI answers vary from run to run. The average of several measurements shows the real trend.
  • A fixed routine of around 30 minutes a month is enough to read both sources together and decide on your next steps.

As of September 2026

Start of the month, marketing meeting. Management wants to know whether the company now shows up in ChatGPT and in Google's AI answers, and whether the work on content is paying off. With two data sources and half an hour, you can answer this question with numbers every month.

Two data sources, two perspectives

Google Search Console is Google's free tool for website owners. Based on Google's own data, it shows how often your pages appear and are clicked in Google Search, including in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

GeoUp looks at the answers themselves, including beyond Google. Our tool asks five AI systems typical customer questions and records whether and how your company appears in their answers. Together, the two sources give you a complete picture: what AI says about you and how much of it reaches your website.

What Search Console shows about AI Overviews and AI Mode

Appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console's standard Performance report. They are part of the "Web" search type, together with the classic results, as the Search Console Help explains. AI Mode has been available in Germany since October 2025.

When reading the figures, it helps to know how Google counts:

  • A click on a link in an AI Overview or in AI Mode counts as a regular click.
  • An AI Overview occupies a single position in the search results. All links in it are assigned the same position.
  • Google counts a follow-up question in AI Mode as a new search query.

In addition, there is now a dedicated generative AI performance report. Google announced it on June 3, 2026 and has made it available to all websites worldwide since August 31, 2026. The report shows impressions, meaning how often links to your website were displayed in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device and time period. Google plans to develop the report further together with website owners, for example by adding more metrics.

The breakdown by page is particularly revealing. It shows which of your content Google links to in its AI answers. A GeoUp measurement adds the questions behind it and what AI says about your company.

Three Search Console features for your monthly review

Three newer features are especially helpful when looking back over the month:

  • Weekly and monthly views: Since December 2025, you can switch the chart in the Performance report to weeks or months. This smooths out daily fluctuations, for example from weekends, and makes the trend visible. When you compare two periods in particular, the chart becomes much clearer this way.
  • Branded queries filter: Since November 2025, Search Console automatically separates queries containing your company or brand name from all other queries. Since March 2026, the filter has been available to all eligible websites; the requirements include sufficient search volume. Google describes branded queries as a measure of brand awareness and the remaining queries as the way new users find you.
  • Custom annotations: Since November 2025, you can right-click to attach a note of up to 120 characters to a date in the chart, such as "FAQ page revised". This way, even months later, you can see at a glance which measure went live when.

What a GeoUp measurement captures

With every measurement, GeoUp asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews 30 typical customer questions from your industry. For each system, it records whether your company is mentioned, in which position it appears and which sources the AI cites for it. You can add your own questions, for example about a specific service or region.

The measurement runs regularly, up to weekly, which builds up a measurement series. Because the systems answer differently, it's best to track each one as a separate line.

Only the series shows the real trend

Our GeoUp analysis from September 24, 2026 shows how valuable a measurement series is. It is based on 19 client websites with 119 measurement runs and 17,790 AI answers since July 2026. Each run comprises 30 questions to five AI systems, which makes 150 answers. The metric is the percentage of these answers in which a company appears.

A well-known automotive supplier reached 28.0% on September 7, 40.7% on September 15 and 30.0% on September 23. These are three quite different values within 16 days, with identical questions and an identical method. The reason: AI systems compose every answer from scratch, and with 150 answers, a single mention already accounts for 0.67 percentage points. The average of the three runs is 32.9%, compared with 31.2% in July, which is a consistently high level.

Genuine growth is particularly easy to spot in the series. A B2B software provider improved over four runs from 25.3 to 27.3, then to 28.0 and finally to 28.7%. Each individual step is small, but four increases in a row are a clear signal.

For your own analysis, this means: compare the average of the last three runs with the average of three earlier runs, using the same questions and the same method. As a rule of thumb, a change of two percentage points or more counts as real movement. With 150 answers, that is three mentions. GeoUp provides the series, and you read the trend from it.

The 30-minute routine, step by step

Set a fixed date, such as the first working day of the month, and follow the same steps every time:

  1. Overall picture in Search Console (five minutes): Open the Performance report, select the monthly view and compare clicks and impressions with the previous month.
  2. AI features (five minutes): In the generative AI performance report, you can see how impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode are developing and which pages appear there most often.
  3. Queries and pages (five minutes): Use the branded queries filter to check how searches for your name and general search queries are developing. Note down the queries and pages that have grown.
  4. GeoUp measurement series (ten minutes): Compare the averages for each AI system, the position of your mentions and the cited sources. Pay attention to which of your pages the AI links to and which other sources come up for your topics.
  5. Decide on next steps (five minutes): Write down two or three concrete next steps and add an annotation in Search Console for every measure you implement.

Reading both sources together: patterns and next steps

You gain the most insight by comparing the two sources directly. These four patterns help you interpret what you see:

  • A page collects AI impressions and is cited as a source in GeoUp. This page has found a format that AI systems like to pick up. Apply its structure and depth to other topics.
  • GeoUp shows questions for which the AI mainly cites other sources. This is where the potential lies: an article of your own that answers exactly this question, or a well-maintained listing where the AI looks things up.
  • Mentions in GeoUp are rising, and branded searches are picking up. Together, this is a good sign of growing awareness. Keep your home page, service pages and company details up to date so that prospects find exactly what the AI tells them about you.
  • One AI system mentions you much more often than another. The more reserved system shows where there is still room to grow. The sources it cites tell you where additional presence is worthwhile.

This is exactly the analysis that goes into the monthly report of our AI visibility service: what has become more visible and what we did to achieve it. Our team continuously measures with GeoUp, writes new articles on the questions your customers ask AI and strengthens your presence on your website and wherever AI systems look things up. AI does the work, our team makes the decisions: every measure is reviewed by people. You can book our SEO and GEO expert team at any time in addition to GeoUp. Frequently asked questions

How often should I check my AI visibility?
A fixed date once a month is enough for the overview. The measurement itself is best run more often, at least monthly and ideally every two weeks, so that you can quickly form averages from three runs. GeoUp measures regularly for this purpose, up to weekly.

Does Search Console also show how ChatGPT talks about my company?
Search Console shows data from Google Search, which includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. How ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer questions from your industry is captured by a GeoUp measurement. Together, this gives you a view of all five systems.

Why can't I see the generative AI performance report yet?
According to Google, the report appears as soon as a website has collected enough impressions in the AI features of Google Search. Until then, a GeoUp measurement shows you how AI systems answer questions on your topics and which sources they draw on.

When does a change in the measurement count as real?
As a rule of thumb, the average of the last three runs should differ from the average of three earlier runs by at least two percentage points, with the same questions and the same method. With 150 answers per run, that is three mentions. If the direction holds over several runs, the signal is particularly clear.

Conclusion

AI visibility is easy to check today. Search Console shows how often Google displays your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode and how much of that reaches you through search. GeoUp shows what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews say about your company and which sources they cite. If you read both sources together every month and focus on averages rather than individual values, you will recognize the real trend and know which measure comes next.
